About this scan
What this scan involves
The nuchal translucency is a small pocket of fluid at the back of every baby's neck between eleven and fourteen weeks. Its thickness is measured precisely on ultrasound. A larger measurement is associated with a higher chance of certain chromosomal conditions, most commonly Down syndrome, and of some heart conditions, and is used as part of first-trimester screening.
Screening, not diagnosis
The NT measurement estimates chance; it does not give a yes or no answer. Most babies with a raised measurement are healthy, and a normal measurement does not rule everything out. If your result suggests a higher chance, we will explain what it means and, with your consent, contact your maternity unit or GP so that the next steps are discussed with you promptly.
Part of a wider picture
In many pathways the NT measurement is combined with a blood test and your age to produce an overall screening result, known as the combined test. Whether that applies to you depends on the pathway your maternity unit or GP has arranged. Our report gives the measurement and the scan findings so it can be used within that pathway.
An early look at the baby
Alongside the measurement, the sonographer reviews the baby's early structure: the skull and brain, the abdominal wall, the limbs and the stomach and bladder, and confirms the heartbeat and your dates. Some conditions can already be seen at this stage; many cannot, which is why the detailed anatomy scan at twenty weeks still matters.
When to have it
The best time for this scan
Ideal timing: Twelve to thirteen weeks.

Before 11 weeks
Too early. The baby is not yet large enough for the measurement to be valid.

11 to 14 weeks
The measurement can only be taken in this window. Booking for twelve to thirteen weeks leaves room to rebook if the baby will not cooperate.

After 14 weeks
Too late for NT. Your maternity unit can advise on second-trimester screening, and the Detailed Anatomy Scan is offered from twenty weeks.

What to expect
Before, during and after
Before your scan
No specific preparation. Bring your dates and any earlier scan results. If your GP or maternity unit has given you a screening form, bring that too.
During the scan
The scan is done through the abdomen and takes about thirty minutes. The measurement needs the baby in a particular position, so there may be some waiting, a walk around or a change of position to encourage the baby to move. Occasionally a transvaginal scan gives a clearer view, and would be offered with your consent.
After your scan
The measurement and findings are explained on the day. The written consultant report follows, typically within three working days, and is sent to your GP or maternity unit with your consent so that it can be used in your screening pathway.

Frequently asked
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book this scan yourself. If you are having combined screening through your GP or maternity unit, bring their form so the report can be matched to it.
Does this scan include the blood test?
No. The blood test that forms part of combined screening is arranged separately through your GP or maternity unit. Our report provides the scan part of the picture.
What if the measurement is raised?
A raised measurement means a higher chance, not a diagnosis. We will explain the result clearly and, with your consent, contact your maternity unit or GP the same day so that further testing can be discussed with you without delay.
What if the baby will not get into position?
It happens. We allow time within the appointment, and if the measurement still cannot be taken we will offer a repeat appointment within the window at no additional charge.
Can I bring someone?
Yes. One adult guest is welcome in the room.
